He knows better than anyone that we aren’t perfect, but that doesn’t make us inherently evil. They stand as reminders of the kindness, the mercy, the Chesed that he believes exists in all human beings, even in sinners like him. Why do we do such horrible things? Are we all inherently evil? Is there any point to retaining our human traits at all, when human nature seems to do more harm than good?Įdward’s automail limb, especially his arm, are placeholders of sorts. The fact that Edward pays with his right arm, the physical representation of his Chesed, indicates his fall from grace and his loss of innocence by daring to try and raise the dead, also marking him as a sinner who has failed to follow God’s will.īut the loss of its physical form doesn’t mean it’s lost altogether.įullmetal Alchemist is all about the good and bad in human beings. If it wasn’t, the price paid by its perpetrators wouldn’t be so high. I stated earlier that Chesed can mean “grace,” “mercy,” or “kindness.” But it does have another meaning: “the intention to emulate God.” Human transmutation is without a doubt one of the worst crimes that a person could commit by any standard in human society likewise, it’s one of the gravest sins against God, the Truth. Why?īecause what Arakawa wants to communicate to her audience is that what Edward loses by performing human transmutation-by opening the Gate of Truth and daring to play God, by venturing where no mere human should-is not merely his arm, but his Chesed. Despite the fact that he loses both of these limbs, Arakawa and the series tend to put far more emphasis on his right arm. When Edward performs human transmutation and first opens the Gate of Truth, he loses his right arm and left leg as payment, which forces him to rely on automail limbs. In the case of Chesed and Gevurah, as indicated by their positions on the Tree of Life, they correspond to the right and left arms respectively.Īnd now I can talk a little more about Fullmetal. All Sephiroth correspond to parts of the body, as the second picture above shows. Chesed, meaning “grace,” “mercy,” or “kindness” is the second sephirah on the right of the tree (see the second picture above for the proper perspective), and Gevurah, meaning “judgement,” is the second sephirah on the left.
